Job Description

We want to stress something from the outset here; this is not an ordinary job offer. We are looking for the most well-rounded forest professional in BC; a certain someone with forestry “je ne sais quoi”. Well, actually we do know what. We want the most kick-ass, radical, diligent, competent forest pro. One with forestry omnipotence, so to speak. Okay…that may be too much, so we will accept a few steps back, kinda like a demi-god i.e. Loki or Thor. A tall ask for sure, but one we believe we can achieve. So if you’ve got the chops, please read on!

Credentials: Must be RPF or RFT with experience managing multiple large ($500k – 1.0M) multiphase layout and engineering contracts, or something similar. Ideally have managed a larger (>30 person) team/company. You should, with the previous two credentials, have at least 10 years practicing forestry in BC. In the perfect world, you will have tactical timber development experience. Experience developing and maintaining long-term business relationships with indigenous governments. And finally, experience with tenure management for large or small area-based tenures.

Well that was a lot, but we have more. Here are some other must haves:

  • A true desire for tangible, real reconciliation
  • You respect all peoples and practice equity and inclusion every day.
  • An honest desire to change how forest resources are managed in BC
  • Experience innovating in some aspect of your practice.
  • Must be one helluva a cool person – I mean in all aspects of being i.e. level-headed, cool under pressure, chill vibe, not easily perturbable…you get the point (he said hopefully)
  • You consistently want to achieve success, you always act with integrity and do what the hell you said you would do. You like to take on calculated risks and have a strong sense of adventure. If you shred on snow or dirt, that is a definite bonus.
  • You are gonna want to live and work in the Okanagan (Vernon or Kelowna) – best damn place in the Province to practice forestry (at least that’s what we think)
  • You gotta love, love, love forestry. This is a non-negotiable and probably painfully clear and maybe not even worth mentioning, so strike this from the record.
  • You also have to love working with and building teams – a people person is a must. Empathy, compassion and self awareness are key attributes for success in this role.
  • You have to be adaptable. This should be self explanatory given the industry we are involved in and the type of work that we do.
  • Ideally you are a dog person. We will take cat people but prefer canine lovers (I mean they pretty much run the offices)
  • Love for the outdoors – goes without saying but worth adding in nonetheless.
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit.

You will oversee and coordinate our forestry operations in the Okanagan which include the professional services:

  • Multiphase layout and engineering, from planning through to permit submission
  • Timber Cruising
  • Harvesting and Roads Supervision
  • Silviculture
  • Other one-off forestry projects

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Strategic Planning – work with the Partners to develop a 5 year plan to meet long term goals and achieve vision and revisit plan annually
  • Business Development – assist with Business Development for the Forestry Division, submit proposals/tenders
  • Finances - manage utilization and training budget of teams, project P/L, expenses, invoicing, forecasting and budgeting
  • Optimized allocation of resources – trucks, equipment and personnel
  • Contract management – work with the Project Managers to liaise with and help troubleshoot on big ticket contract items.
  • People and culture – mentorship and training of the PMs, liaising with and supporting the PMs and STs, enhancing Cabin’s culture all the time, lead the safety of your crews.
  • Systems – implement Cabin’s internal systems, build out new and better systems where necessary.

Cabin is committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace by creating a diverse and inclusive work environment for everyone. Cabin is also proud to provide professional services which support the rights and title of First Nations, and be active partners in reconciliation in all our work.

We thank all candidates for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Requirements:

  • Work Permit
